Founded in 1942, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is the leading clinical society devoted to the care of older adults. The AGS promotes high quality, comprehensive and accessible care for America's older population, including those who are chronically ill and disabled. The organization provides leadership to health care professionals, policy makers and the public by developing, implementing and advocating programs in patient care, research, professional and public education, and public policy.
Its 6,000-plus members include primary care physicians, geriatricians, geropsychiatrists, nurse practitioners, social workers, physician assistants, physical therapists, pharmacists, social workers and others from the U.S. and around the world who are dedicated to improving the health, independence and quality of life of all older people.
The AGS has long championed efforts to expand the national work force of clinicians with the knowledge, skills and attitude to care for our aging population. Since the early 1990s, with funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City, the AGS has worked effectively to increase geriatrics expertise among sub-specialists in internal medicine, practicing primary care physicians, and non-primary care specialists.
Recognizing that the aging of America presents many challenges and opportunities to society as a whole, the AGS reached beyond its role as a professional medical society and launched the Foundation for Health in Aging (FHA) in 1999. The FHA builds a bridge between the research and practice of geriatrics health care professionals and the public and advocates on behalf of older adults and their special needs through public education, research, and public policy. For more information on FHA's initiatives or its Lifetime of Caring Gala, please call (212) 755-6810, or visit FHA's website www.healthinaging.org.
