Guidelines for the AGS Council of
State Affiliate Representatives (COSAR)


A. Mission and Goals of COSAR

  1. Enhance the visibility of geriatric medicine at the local level

  2. Provide local educational programs in geriatric medicine

  3. Facilitate communication with the national organization on local policy issues

  4. Facilitate professional membership development across disciplines at the local level

  5. Build membership at both the local and national level

  6. Increase the capacity of public outreach


B. COSAR Responsibility

  1. Serve as the official committee representing the local affiliate organizations associated with the American Geriatrics Society.

  2. Serve as an official vehicle of communication between the affiliates and the American Geriatrics Society.

  3. Report directly to the AGS Board of Directors, through the Co-Chairs, on issues regarding public policy, education, and advocacy affecting affiliates and their members.

  4. Foster the growth and development of the AGS affiliates.

  5. Responsible for monitoring the activities of the state affiliates.

  6. Provide a network of affiliates that can be used to disseminate information from the AGS to local affiliate members.

  7. Provide local educational programs in geriatric medicine.

  8. Facilitate professional membership development across disciplines at the local and national level.

  9. Identify local fund-raising strategies to provide financial resources to support local initiatives.


C. State Affiliate Responsibility

  1. Assign/elect a committed representative to serve on the Council and attend Council meetings.

  2. Elect a new COSAR Representative every three years. Or request, through the Council, an extended term.

  3. Bring issues, in the form of resolutions, to the Council.

  4. Assist in promoting the Foundation for Health in Aging.

  5. Build an interdisciplinary membership.

  6. Provide AGS with updated membership lists to facilitate mailings for affiliates and list serv communications.

  7. Promote AGS: affiliates will mention the AGS and its website in local newsletters and will include AGS information at all educational meetings.


D. Election of the COSAR Chairs/COSAR Board Representatives

  1. Co-Chair will serve a three-year staggered term.

  2. COSAR Representatives will nominate chairs from within the Council.

  3. To vote for the COSAR Co-Chairs, the Council representatives will vote for one individual from the slate of nominees. Each affiliate has one vote. The person with the greatest number of votes will be elected. In the event of a tie, the Council will vote on the tied candidates.

  4. The Co-Chairs will also be the elected COSAR representatives to the AGS Board of Directors. The nomination will be confirmed by the AGS Nominations Committee and approved by the Board of Directors.
