Part VIII - Position and Clinical Statements and Papers

The American Geriatrics Society
POSITION STATEMENTS, PAPERS, AND GUIDELINES

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is a professional medical society dedicated to improving the health and well being of all older persons. The Society's objectives are: 1) to develop, support, and promote the clinical practice of geriatrics and support practitioners providing such care; 2) to increase the number of physicians knowledgeable about geriatrics and committed to the clinical care of the aged; 3) to engage in a vigorous public policy effort that will result in improved health care for older people; 4) to promote effective, high quality research that addresses the health care problems of older people; and 5) to develop and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with other professional organizations, provider groups, political and lay organizations concerned with the health care of older persons.

The AGS position statements, papers, and guidelines are developed to help accomplish the above goals. The Society uses these papers to bring important issues in geriatric education, research, clinical practice, and public policy to the attention of those working in the field, including policy makers, legislators, people in the health care industry, clinicians, and others.

Clinical guidelines are developed to set practice standards for the medical care of older adults and curriculum guidelines are developed to stimulate and enhance geriatric education. With the support of the AGS Washington, D.C. office, position statements address vital issues of access to quality care, research expansion and funding, and medical ethics. These papers serve to educate federal representatives as well as the public and health care professionals.

The statements are developed by AGS committee members and special ad hoc work groups, then are approved by the AGS Board of Directors. The statements are reviewed and updated every two years to keep pace with the rapidly changing field of geriatrics. Many AGS position statements and guidelines are published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society and the AGS Newsletter.
