The VolunteerMatch (VM) Program

The VolunteerMatch (VM) Program (www.volunteermatch.org) is an online network service that helps potential volunteers find volunteer opportunities that fit their interests and abilities. Nonprofit members can post volunteer opportunities and track interested volunteers free of charge using this online program.

A study done by PDH Research Associates in December of 2003 highlighted the successful use of VM among both non-profits and volunteers. 85% of nonprofit respondents agreed that VM helped them to recruit volunteers who they otherwise would not have been able to find. 90% were satisfied with the quality of the volunteers they had recruited through VM. More than half of the VM nonprofits reported receiving six or more responses for each listing they post. On average, they are converting 25% of those referrals into volunteers.

VM has launched an initiative to expand and enhance their network to encourage civic engagement among older adults. Baby boomers are a demographic which serve as a fresh resource for nonprofits in need of volunteers, especially those who can offer a lifetime of personal and professional skills. Many are newly retired and are going back to get second jobs because of their interest in making a difference.

Volunteer opportunity postings stay on the site for six months, at which time the nonprofit is contacted and has the opportunity to renew the post.

COSAR and Volunteer Match

COSAR is planning on using the Volunteer Match Program to help those affiliates who are interested, to build up their staffing capabilities using volunteers. To date, COSAR representatives have drafted the following draft job descriptions which can be edited to post on the Volunteer Match Website:

Each Affiliate is asked to decide which of the positions or any additional positions they are interested in recruiting volunteers for and to send a job description to AGS Staff to use in the posting.

AGS Staff will post each description to the website, and interested volunteers will be asked to contact the affiliates directly. Once a position is filled, each affiliate is asked to let AGS Staff know so that the ad can be removed from the website.
