2008 ADGAP Board Election
There are two vacant Class A Board seats on the ADGAP Board. This election is for two Board members who will serve a term commencing at the May 2008 ADGAP meeting and ending at the May 2011 ADGAP meeting. Drs. Sanjay Asthana, Charles Cefalu, James Cambell, and Daniel Swagerty are running for these open seats. Brief autobiographical statements are listed below. Please vote for two candidates using the survey that was sent out via email. Please remember to vote by April 7, 2008.
Sanjay Asthana, MD
Dr. Sanjay Asthana is Professor of Medicine and Head of the Section of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, WI. Additionally, he is Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Madison Veterans Hospital, Director of the recently funded Hartford Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine and Training, Director of Wisconsin Comprehensive Memory Program and Associate Director of the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute. Dr. Asthana is widely recognized for his expertise and leadership in geriatrics and Alzheimer’s disease research, and has received extensive funding from various sources including the NIH, VA, the Hartford Foundation and ADGAP to support his research program. He is one of the recipients of the prestigious Hartford/ADGAP Academic Geriatrics Leadership Scholarship, and was recently awarded an Academic Leadership Award (KO7) from NIA in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Asthana is committed toward advancing the missions of ADGAP in addressing special problems faced by academic geriatric programs, attracting talented physician-scientists to the field of gerontology, and fostering future leaders in geriatrics. Building upon his unique background as a program leader and an active investigator, the strengths that he will bring to the ADGAP Board include recent experience of establishing a comprehensive academic geriatrics program at a major institution in the country, demonstrated record of mentoring several physician-scientists toward successful academic careers in geriatrics, a good understanding of the strategic priorities and missions of NIH and the VA, strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to work collaboratively to help ADGAP accomplish all of its missions.
James Campbell, MD
Dr. James Campbell currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Director of the Geriatric Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, MetroHealth campus. He has been actively involved in geriatric academic programs for over twenty years and as been honored to be chosen as one of the Hartford/ADGAP Geriatric Leadership Scholars as well as having served on the Board of the American Geriatrics Society and the National Chronic Care Consortium. He has been President of the Ohio Geriatrics Society and Co-Chair of the Council on State-Affiliate Representatives. He has developed a large successful geriatric academic program in Cleveland at MetroHealth with twenty geriatricians and seven geriatric nurse practitioners. He most recently successfully opened the Senior Health & Wellness Center, a thirty-two million dollar center in Cleveland devoted to the care of geriatric patients including long term care, outpatient care, hospice care, PACE care and community organizations such as the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging. He brings to the ADGAP Board a depth of experience in local, regional and national program development as well as the issues facing the development of geriatrics as a primary care and specialized field of medicine. His administrative skills and program development skills will be a great resource for ADGAP. He has shown leadership while serving on the Council on State- Affiliate Representatives and President of the Ohio Geriatric Society in development of not only the academic side of programs but the clinical programs as well as emphasizing inclusiveness and incorporating fellows in training, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals. His long standing devotion to teaching is demonstrated by the successful development of a two-year continuity experience for Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine medical students in geriatrics through successful development of sub-specialty curriculum in care of the trauma patient and the aging patient with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
Charles A. Cefalu, MD, MS
Dr. Charles Cefalu completed a geriatric medicine fellowship and Masters of Science at Bowman Gray School of Medicine/Wake Forest University from 1990-1992. After a five year tenure at Georgetown School of Medicine in DC from 1992-1997, he became and currently serves as Program Director of the LSU Geriatric Medicine Fellowship and Chief of the Section of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine at LSUHSC. Dr. Cefalu serves as Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee of the American Medical Directors Association and is a member of the Public Policy Committee of the American Geriatrics Society. He also serves on the nursing home initiative of the La. Healthcare Review, the organization that oversees quality improvement by Medicare (CMS) for Louisiana nursing homes. In 2007, he was honored for being the Advisory Board member of the year. In 1996, Dr. Cefalu was one of ten family physicians chosen nationally to serve as a Residency Assistance Program/Hartford Geriatric Initiative Consultant for the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Dr. Cefalu was elected in 1999 to serve a three-year term as Co-Chair of the Council of State Affiliate Representatives (COSAR) and the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society. He founded the AGS Affiliate, the Louisiana Geriatric Society, in 1999. He was awarded Hartford Geriatrics Scholarship status in 2007 by ADGAP. Dr. Cefalu is the author of numerous regional, national, and international publications relative to Geriatric Medicine and has spoken at various local, regional, and national geriatric conferences.
Daniel Swagerty, MD, MPH
Dr. Daniel Swagerty completed medical school, Family Practice residency, and Geriatric Medicine fellowship training at University of Kansas School of Medicine. He also obtained a graduate degree in Public Health from the University of Kansas. Dr. Swagerty is a full time faculty member in the Departments of Family Medicine and Internal Medicine and Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care, Department of Family Medicine. He also serves as the Director of Clinical Geriatrics for the University of Kansas School of Medicine. As the Associate Director for the Landon Center on Aging, he directs undergraduate, graduate and community focused geriatric medical education. Dr. Swagerty is very active in national education and program development for the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs (ADGAP). As an AGS member since 1987, he has had multiple publications in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and poster and symposia presentations at the AGS annual meetings. He has served as the Chair of the AGS Teachers Section and on the Public Policy Committee. Currently, he serves on the AGS Education Committee as the ADGAP Educational Liaison and on the AGS Nominations Committee.
