Geriatric Medicine and ERAS Fellowship

ERAS Fellowships, the electronic system residents and fellowship programs use to manage the fellowship application process, requires fellowship programs to register with the system annually. Programs that have not already signed up for 2007, but are interested in participating with ERAS this season can still register.

Programs who have not already signed up for 2007, but are interested in participating with ERAS this season can still register through ERAS Account Maintenance by submitting an inquiry on the ERAS website at http://www.aamc.org/programs/eras/schools/contactus.htm indicating that you would like to participate. Once the season goes live on July 15, ERAS will then update the participation status and types of training offered. The process takes a week to change a program's participation status.

What is ERAS Fellowship?
ERAS Fellowships is a part of the Electronic Residency Application Service that is provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges. It provides residents with a user friendly interface to create and submit application material. For Fellowship Program Directors, the ERAS Fellowship management software allows them to manage the entire application process, from filing material to scheduling and ranking applicants.

To date, nearly 20 specialties and subspecialties participate in ERAS Fellowship. By 2008, all of the subspecialties of internal medicine will be participating in this system.

Click here to access the December 2005 ERAS online newsletter which will provide you you with the information you need to know about ERAS and the technical requirements to sign up. In January, ERAS will be sending each Fellowship Director a sign up form.

Why Should Geriatrics Fellowship Program Directors Sign-up?
In today's technology-driven society, it is essential that Geriatrics make its application process as user friendly as possible for residents and that we be consistent with how other Fellowship Programs are recruiting their residents.

"Our goal is to ensure that applying for a geriatrics fellowship is easy for residents to navigate and that our approach to the application process is consistent with that of other fellowship programs that trainees are considering as they transition from residency to fellowship," notes ADGAP President Dr. Edmund Duthie.

How will ERAS work for Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Programs?
Geriatric Fellowship Program Directors are able to begin recruiting in 2006 for programs starting in 2007. The recruiting schedule is as follows:

July 1, 2006: Residents can apply for fellowships starting July 1, 2007

July 15, 2006: Program directors have access to applications

May 31, 2007: ERAS closes for maintenance but program directors still have access to applications that they have downloaded locally (this " blackout " will be from June 1 - July 14)

July 1, 2007: The cycle will commence again with recruiting for 2008 program slots

Frequently Asked Questions

How will Fellowship Programs be listed?
Fellowship Programs will be listed as Geriatrics - Family Medicine, and Geriatrics - Internal Medicine.

Will ADGAP and AGS be involved in establishing the application process and requirements for Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Programs?
Yes, ADGAP and AGS leaders and staff are working with ERAS to ensure that the application process is consistent with the needs of Geriatric Medicine.

I usually recruit my fellows in the 2nd year of their residency, how will ERAS meet my needs?
Geriatrics Fellowship Program Directors who recruit on a longer time-frame can still use a paper process for recruiting fellows to their programs. We will continue to work with ERAS staff to try and insure flexibility within the system for those who recruit on a longer time frame.
