Program Components

The Hartford Geriatrics Leadership Scholars Program provides participants with:

  1. Individual Intensive short-term formal training experience
These individual intensive short-term formal training experiences typically are of 2 to 3 weeks duration at well-established institutions that have crafted specific leadership-training programs for physicians or at business schools that have short executive education programs that are available to physicians. As an alternative to these “approved” generic leadership training programs, applicants may propose to enroll in other programs, which will require approval by the Program Directors.

  2. Mentoring by a local leader (Department Chair, Dean, or Senior Institutional Official)
This mentoring includes regular meetings, advice about local institutional politics, and help with strategic planning. In collaboration with the senior national geriatrics leader, the local mentor and the program director will develop goals for the geriatrics program and a timetable for achieving them.

  3. Mentoring by a senior national geriatrics leader
Scholars will be mentored by a senior national geriatrics leader who will be assigned based on discussions between the Scholar and the Selection Committee. This mentoring will occur at annual site visits (see below), through scheduled phone calls, at national ADGAP May and November meetings, and at ADGAP’s Annual Geriatrics Leadership Retreat.

  4. Annual site visits by the geriatrics mentor
Current plans are that in each of the 2 years of the program, the national geriatrics mentor will conduct a site visit to meet with the geriatrics director and key personnel, such as geriatrics faculty, chiefs of related programs (e.g., geriatric psychiatry), the department chair, and deans. During the first of these visits, the national and local mentors will meet with the director to review the director’s program and individual goals and timetable. A written action plan will be drafted. The second site visit can be at the scholar or mentor institution.

  5. Attendance at Annual Geriatrics Leadership Retreats
Each Hartford Leadership Scholar must attend ADGAP’s 2009 and 2010 Annual Geriatrics Leadership Retreats. At these retreats, the director will not only participate in the core sessions but will also attend breakout sessions for Hartford Geriatrics Leadership Scholars and will meet one-on-one with her or his national mentor to discuss progress and problem-solve. Each Leadership Scholar will participate in a 360 degree evaluation and individual coaching session during the first retreat.

  6. Bi-Monthly Conference Calls and Meetings
Hartford Leadership Scholars also serve as a source of support and encouragement for each other. Scholars meet both in person at AGS May and November meetings and via bi-monthly conference calls throughout their participation in the Leadership Scholars Program.

Talk with Program Alumni
We can arrange for potential scholars to speak with a Leadership Scholar to learn more about the program. If you would like to speak with a scholar, please contact Marianna Racz at mracz@americangeriatrics.org and she will match you with a Scholar and help to arrange a call.
