Program Components
The Hartford Senior Geriatrics Leadership Scholars Program is an intensive development program for accomplished leaders in academic geriatrics. Eligible candidates must have been a program director or have played a senior leadership role in Geriatrics for 6 years or more, and be a faculty member at an ADGAP institution. Up to five scholars will be selected for a one-year grant starting October 1, 2009 and ending September 30, 2010. The specific goals of this program are to inform accomplished leaders in academic geriatrics about further opportunities for career advancement, to guide them in their advancement in prominent positions on the national stage, and to maintain them as role models and resources for future leaders of academic geriatrics. The program will include six components over one year:
- Participation in a group learning process, the Hartford National Leaders Colloquium
- One 360-degree evaluation with individual feedback
- Executive coaching for goals assessment, personal strategic planning, implementation, midcourse correction, and maintenance
- Networks for learning with senior national advisors and peers
- Bi-monthly telephone calls among each cohort and meetings among all cohorts at national meetings (ADGAP Retreat, AGS and GSA Meetings)
- Attendance at Annual Geriatrics Leadership Retreats
The Senior Scholars Program includes 6 Components to be completed over one year:
- Hartford National Leaders Colloquium
The goals of this annual Colloquium are to promote individual and group learning about career goals and opportunities, and to build relationships that will foster the achievement of those goals. The Colloquium will be conducted by a professional facilitator and will include seven faculty (the executive coach, a recruitment specialist, and five senior national advisors). The Colloquium will include individual discussions of the 360-degree evaluations, individual executive coaching (spread over the full 4 days of the Colloquium and the Leadership Retreat), faculty presentations, structured group discussions, informal discussions, and time to build relationships. In contrast to the program for new Division Chiefs, the Colloquium will develop the talents of leaders who are already accomplished managers. Thus, the Colloquium will focus on strategic career planning and development and the establishment of new networks to foster planning and development at this level. The 2010 Colloquium will be held January 14 -15, 2010 at the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, CA. The Colloquium will precede the 2010 Leadership Retreat, which will be held January 15 – 17, 2010.
- Executive Coaching
Executive coaching is intended to build on the skills and accomplishments of the participants, and to assist them in identifying and achieving career development goals. During this meeting, each participant will receive individual coaching to place their career in the context of their life course, to identify and assess their career goals, to develop a personal career strategic plan, and to design an implementation plan. Each participant will receive 10 hours of executive coaching, with a focus on on-going assessment, redirection, and maintenance of their strategic plans.
- 360-degree Evaluations
360-degree evaluations are intended to better inform Hartford Senior Leadership Scholars by providing the perspectives of direct subordinates, peers, and supervisors on the leaders’ strengths and weaknesses. The 360-degree evaluations will inform judgments about positions and roles that are most congruent with each Scholar’s strengths and interests. The evaluations will be completed during the 2010 Leadership Retreat and will be reviewed individually with each leader during his or her first Leadership Colloquium.
- Network for Group Learning
The Hartford Senior Leadership Scholar will develop and maintain a network for learning from senior national advisors and peers. The senior national advisors will be physicians who have achieved prominence nationally, have been supportive of geriatrics and geriatrics leaders, and are well positioned to assist the Hartford National Leader in future steps. (Prominent physicians who served as senior national advisors for the 2009 Senior Leadership Scholars were: Drs. Bruce Chernof, William Hall, Talmadge King, Cheryl Phillips, and John Stobo) The network for learning will be established at the Hartford National Leaders Colloquium, which will be attended by senior national advisors as well as the Hartford Senior Leadership Scholars. Each Senior Leadership Scholar will meet individually with at least three Advisors to review formally his/her strategic career plan, the timeline, and its implementation. The Colloquium will also provide opportunities for the Senior Leadership Scholars to meet informally with the other Advisors in attendance. The Senior Leadership Scholar will draft a written action plan that reflects input from the Advisors. Each Scholar will monitor progress toward meeting the timeline and action plan, including potential obstacles and strategies for overcoming them, as part of his/her on-going work with the executive coach. The Advisors will be available to the Senior Leadership Scholars after the Colloquium for further discussion of the action plan, timeline, barriers, and potential solutions. These relationships can be fostered through a variety of venues (e.g., site visits to the Scholar or Mentor’s institution, connecting at national scientific or society meetings including the Hartford National Leaders Colloquium, and via telephone and electronic communication). Because each Senior Geriatrics Leader will have unique needs, a small amount of flexible funds will be allocated for additional in-person meetings with an Advisor, executive coaching, or other formal training at leadership development programs.
- Network for Group Learning
ADGAP will convene bi-monthly telephone calls among each cohort of Hartford Senior Leadership Scholars and meetings among all cohorts at national meetings (ADGAP Retreat, AGS and GSA Annual Meetings). These conference calls and meetings will be structured to promote learning and problem solving among the Scholars.
- Attendance at Annual Geriatrics Leadership Retreats
Each Hartford Senior Leadership Scholar will attend the 2010 Annual Geriatrics Leadership Retreat, which will take place in conjunction with the Colloquium. At the Retreats, the Senior Leadership Scholar will not only participate in the core sessions but will also attend breakout sessions for Hartford Senior Leadership Scholars and will meet one-on-one with her or his Advisors to discuss progress and problem-solve. In addition, Senior Leadership Scholars will assume mentoring roles for junior leaders at the retreat.
