Senior Scholars Program Overview

The Senior Leadership Scholars Programs now invites applications from all senior leaders at ADGAP institutions

This program is designed for accomplished leaders in academic geriatrics who seek further opportunities to shape the future of medicine and enhance the health of the aging population. These leaders are poised to assume advanced leadership positions in geriatrics or beyond geriatrics, either within academia or outside academic medicine. The targeted development of these leaders is critical to the field.

This leadership development program aims to increase the influence of geriatrics leaders both locally and nationally, and to enhance the attractiveness of geriatrics to “the best and the brightest.” The discipline of geriatrics will benefit substantially if its leaders assume positions that influence health care, medical education, science, and policy at the highest levels. Moreover, the success of these leaders will enhance the appeal of geriatrics to ambitious, talented young physicians.

The goal of this program is to inform accomplished leaders in academic geriatrics about further opportunities for career advancement, to guide them in their advancement in prominent positions on the national stage, and to maintain them as role models and resources for future leaders of academic geriatrics. As these geriatrics leaders consider new professional opportunities, they face a variety of challenges. How do they maximize their ability to make a national impact or implement constructive change? Can this be done within their current positions, or is it best achieved in another job? How do they choose among many options for advanced leadership? What is the appropriate timing? How do they maintain and build on their passionate commitment to geriatrics after assuming positions where the responsibilities extend beyond geriatrics? How do they train the next generation of leaders? How do they transition geriatrics at their institutions so that the momentum and gains during their tenures as program directors are not lost?

The first two classes of Senior Leadership Scholars were selected in 2007 and 2008. They included:

Class of 2007   Class of 2008
Marie Bernard, MD   Patricia Blanchette, MD
Steve Counsell, MD   Jan Busby-Whitehead, MD
Suzanne Fields, MD   Paul Eleazar, MD
Linda Fried, MD   Robert Schwartz, MD
Lewis Lipsitz, MD

We seek a third class of equally outstanding leaders who seek new skills and opportunities to advance geriatrics and medicine.
