Report on Specter Harkin Amendment
Roberts/Reed Letter
On March 10th, Senators Roberts and Reed circulated the letter below to their colleagues in Congress asking them to join them in signing a letter to Senators Specter and Harkin in support of restoration of Title VII Funding. AGS is asking for grass roots advocacy with your Senators to ask them to sign onto this letter. Click here to read the letter.
DeLauro Amendment
During the first week of April, Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), who sits on the House Budget Committee, introduced an amendment to House Budget Resolution that mirrored the Specter/Harkin Amendment. AGS and ADGAP members living in states of Representatives who sit on the House Budget Committee were asked to take action and email their Representatives in support of the DeLauro amendment. The House Budget Committee voted along party lines and defeated the amendment.
House Budget Resolution H. Con. Res. 376
On April 7th, House Leaders determined that they did not have enough votes to pass the House Budget Resolution H. Con. Res. 376 and Congress adjourned for the spring recess. One of the main points of contention was the severe cuts in domestic spending that were included in the House version of the bill. Representatives Michael Castle (R-DE), Nancy Johnson (R-CT), and Dave Reichert (R-WA) had proposed a substitute amendment to add $7 billion in discretionary spending that would restore cuts to health, education, and low-income energy programs, including the Geriatrics Health Professions program. This amendment, which mirrored the Specter/Harkin amendment that passed in the Senate, was not introduced on the floor of the House. It remains unclear as to what will happen when House members return to the Hill the week of April 24th.
