Jerome Kowal Award

The Ohio Geriatrics Society funded the Jerome Kowal Award again this year, sponsoring three medical students at $750 each to attend the American Geriatrics Society Annual Symposium in Seattle. Supriya Shah is a medical student at Northeastern Ohio Medical University. She participated in the AFAR program in 2011 at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and presented a poster at AGS entitled “Osteopontin, a Marker of Sleep Disordered Breathing in Older Individuals.” Jerrod Steimle, a second year Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, presented his work in the Johns Hopkins University AFAR program, entitled "Hospital Experience of Caregivers of Older Adults: A Qualitative Study." A third medical student, Kevin Shrestha, is in his second year at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He is working on a project entitled "Urinary Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin Predicts Worsening Renal Function in Patients with Heart Failure in Both Preserved and Impaired Glomerular Filtration Rate.” He will attend the Annual Statewide Geriatric Medicine Symposium in Cambridge, OH in October, 2012. We are proud of all of them!

We hope to offer the Jerome Kowal award again in 2013 to 1-3 students in Ohio in the medical or allied health professions. Applications will be available in late 2012. Contact COSAR representative Dr. Barbara Messinger-Rapport at rapporb@ccf.org in the fall of 2012 for information.
