Learning Objectives: (1) use risk-factor assessment scales and apply them to pressure ulcer prevention, including documentation of such; (2) describe how CMS and other insurers look at pressure ulcers in terms of quality and reimbursement; (3) discuss the educational agenda for physicians, including how to identify pressure ulcers and stage them according to current NPUAP criteria; and (4) identify factors in the healthcare environment that can be modified to improve prevention of pressure ulcers and properly document wounds to maximize hospital reimbursement and minimize litigation risk.
