A Word From Your Chair...
As the new Chair of the Fellows-in-Training Section of the American Geriatric
Society, I would like give you an introduction to myself. I am currently
a fellow at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and the Stein
Institute of Research in Aging (SIRA). The many complex issues of aging
intrigue me. Specifically, I am interested in osteoporosis and clinical
outcomes research. My current research involves both clinical trials and
epidemiological outlooks related to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis has tremendous
impact in the elderly population. It can lead to debilitating fractures
and marked functional decline. Although hip fractures and vertebral fractures
often leads our elderly into long-term care facilities, osteoporosis treatment
in these settings is still not the standard of care. The education of
patients, students, residents, and the community regarding the many facets
of aging is highly enjoyable. I am an advocate for education, research,
and healthcare in geriatrics.
In this academic year, I hope to open a channel of communication among
all geriatric fellows and increase fellows participation in the AGS. With
your help, we can identify needs of fellows in training and implement
programs to assist with those issues. Some issues of importance discussed
among fellows at our recent AGS meeting: establishing mentors, finding
research funding, and job placement assistance. Through our website, we
hope to establish links that may assist in finding answers for your concerns.
As the year proceeds, many more issues can be discussed and resolutions
introduced. However, the first step is increasing participation and communication.
I encourage all fellows with appealing ideas and constructive resolutions
to send me an email.
Thank you for allowing me the great honor of representing your voices.
