Fellows-in-Training Newsletter
A YEAR IN REVIEW
Donna Brady Raziano, M.D.
AGS 2000-2001 Chair AGS FIT Section, University of Pennsylvania Health
Systems
Hello Everyone!
It has been a busy year as the Chair of the AGS Fellows-In-Training Section.
Congratulations to everyone finishing up the last quarter of this training
year. It is amazing how much we keep learning. I would like to end my
term here with a look at this past year. It sure has been a year of progress
for the FIT section, and I only hope that the section continues to grow
and develop into a useful resource for every fellow-in-training.
FIT Website
The best news is the brand new FIT web site just developed. The FIT web
page can be found as a link from the AGS home page. The directory found
on this page contains all the names from the AGS 2000 conference (be sure
to add your name this year at the May meeting!) The site is in its rarest
form; we are working hard to add more information and links. If you have
any ideas be sure to share them with us! We need your input to make this
a useful site for all fellows! My favorite link is the FRIEDA link, which
is much easier to access than from any other site.
I would also like to welcome Elvy Ickowicz as the new FIT contact at
the AGS in the New York office. Please contact her at eickowicz@americangeriatrics.org
with your suggestions and comments on our website as well as the newsletter.
FIT Chair Elections
I would like to thanks the two individuals who have chosen to run for
the position of 2001-2002 FIT Chair. For the others, please keep this
opportunity in mind for next year. As for you who are not interested in
running, there are still tons of ways to be involved! We are always looking
for input, suggestions, newsletter articles, website ideas, etc. This
is your section, you all have an opportunity to shape it into what you
want and need!
Mentoring
This is an area I take very seriously and I am pleased that Drs. Ted Johnson
and Neil Alexander have agreed to match up mentors through the AGS Mentoring
Program. Further program information can be found in the AGS Annual meeting
Advance Program, I urge you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
AGS 2001 Chicago
I am pleased to announce our program for the Fellows-In-Training Section
Luncheon Session at the 2001 Annual meeting in Chicago on Friday, May
11th. Lunch will be provided by Geri-Med. The focus of this session will
be Professional Development. The goal of the program is to give you exposure
to other individuals in the field from a wide range of institutions all
around the country. The first hour will include introductions and roundtable
discussions with current geriatric faculty with various types and years
of experience. (The full list of names can be found on the back page of
this newsletter.) At the lunch a handout with their names and respective
institutions will be available for those seeking "networking opportunities".
The lunch is a great way to get to know the faces behind the names.
The main feature of the lunch will be our two panels of respected individuals
held from 1-2 P.M. and 2-3 P.M. Each will discuss their career experiences,
the importance of mentoring, and share with us their recommendations.
These panels have been very well received in the past, and I am sure that
they will be great this year. It is fascinating to find out how these
prominent geriatricians have made it to their current positions. (I am
sure it involved lots of hard work!) We plan to finish the luncheon by
3:00 so as to give you all plenty of time to explore the rest of the conference
that day.
Fellows Night Out!!
This is a continued tradition started at GSA this past fall. On Friday
May 11th, we will meet between 7:15-7:30 PM at the Registration Table.
This is right after AFAR/ Hartford Reception. Anyone, including fellows,
past fellows, residents and significant others are welcome! This is our
night out! It is time for some fun!
It has been a pleasure receiving emails and getting to know some of you.
It has been an honor and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to
serve as your chair. I wish you all lots of luck and success in this exciting
and prosperous field of geriatrics!!
See you in Chicago!
Donna
