A Few Words From Your New Chair

Dear Fellows:

I am excited and pleased as Chair-Elect of the Fellow In Train Section to welcome my colleagues in geriatric medicine. This is an exciting time in geriatric medicine. As a greater percentage of the population is reaching their typical retirement years, the public is becoming increasingly interested in the unique issues of the older adults. Thus, as fellows we are preparing to address these concerns with needed expertise.

As geriatricians, we have a valuable skill set to offer medicine. We can break down the multiple problems of a complex patient and prioritize our plans to help maintain quality of life. Our philosophy of preserving function and quality in life helps to organize a public health policy agenda. Geriatric medicine with its added understanding of the issues surrounding aging will be instrumental in advocating for our patients' rights and interests.

I hope to talk with many geriatrics fellows at the AGS meeting in Las Vegas May 17-21. We will be able to share past accomplishments and discuss new ideas for practice, training, and research. Please share with me your thoughts and suggestions throughout the year.
