Continued membership and involvement in the American Geriatrics Society following a fellowship is a judicious decision for the many health care professionals who, as they advance in their careers, share the society's commitment to improving the health and well-being of older adults. Our membership is at an all-time high through improved products, expanded member services and wider media coverage. Current members turn to AGS for unparalleled professional and educational opportunities as well as communications vehicles that deliver a stream of information on policy, research and other topics that matter to you. Some of the major benefits afforded members are:
Quality AGS publications and products reflect what matters most to health care professionals.
The crop of publications and products AGS offers is dynamic, growing in size and scope each year. Current offerings discounted for members include: the seventh edition of the highly regarded reference book for geriatric prescribing and assessment, Geriatrics at Your Fingertips (also available online and for PDA devices); the frequently updated Geriatrics Review Syllabus and related Teaching Slides Web site, where the latest information on the practice of geriatrics, suitable for faculty and students alike, is available in one place; the Practice Management Toolkit, an online resource that provides the nuts and bolts of starting or streamlining a practice; and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, the peer-review scientific journal that has become synonymous with cutting-edge, newsworthy research in the professional community and in the media.
The AGS Annual Scientific Meeting is the premier professional gathering for research on aging.
AGS' diverse and stimulating program, with reduced registration and CME/CEU fees, wins accolades year after year from attendees, with cutting edge research presentations and educational symposia spanning several days. If CME credits, workshops and lectures aren't enough, networking and enrichment opportunities are endless at gatherings such as the Presidential Reception and Special Interest Group meetings. AGS members know that the Society has earned a reputation for delivering the premier scientific meeting for research in aging.
Substantial opportunities exist to help contribute to a legislative agenda related to geriatric care.
AGS' public policy voice is clear and strong. The Society relies on member involvement at the grassroots and affiliate levels in promoting and seeking cosponsors for common-sense legislation affecting geriatric care, including the Geriatric and Chronic Care Management Act. Members also stand against policy actions that are detrimental to care for older adults, such as cuts to the Medicare physician fee schedule. They can join our 200-strong key congressional contacts database, educating lawmakers about issues affecting geriatrics health care providers and their patients.
Group work provides opportunities for involvement in the subject areas you are most passionate about.
As your career takes shape, the AGS presents substantial opportunities for involvement in your particular areas and niches of interest. Many members seek professional enrichment committee and group work. Currently, there are 11 committees (devoted to topics such as Clinical Practice, Health Care Systems, Research and Public Policy) as well as four Board Advisory Groups (Public Policy, Practice Management, Long Range Planning and Geriatrics Interdisciplinary). In addition, over 20 Special Interest Groups convene throughout the year and at the Annual Meeting, and members are encouraged to start their own. Current SIGs include Elder Abuse, Junior Faculty, Palliative Care and Provider Reimbursement.
AGS communications vehicles help you stay informed and engaged.
The members-only section of the AGS Web site, e-mail listserves and press releases, our quarterly AGS Newsletter and numerous other communications vehicles give you the information you need to stay ahead of the curve. Whether it's the latest bill out of Washington, current funding opportunities, research news or the professional achievements and activities of members, AGS keeps its antennae up and its channels open, listening to the needs of members and spreading the word about collective and individual accomplishments.
It is not surprising that the AGS enjoys consistently high retention numbers among its fellows given the scope of the benefits of membership. AGS leaders are grateful to its fellows and hopeful for their continued service and involvement.
