Dear Fellows,
As the future leaders in caring for older adults, we must both respond to the current state of health care and look towards the future. I have asked three young leaders in their fields to write about their current pursuits, and a veteran geriatrician to write about the future of geriatric medicine.
Dr. Rothman, a fellow at Yale University, and the Fellow-in-Training chair elect, writes about influenza and the nursing home setting. He provides practical measures on what to do if a flu outbreak emerges when you are on call.
Dr. Holmes is currently an instructor at the University of Chicago and will soon join the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She provides a structured review of the literature on polypharmacy. Dr. Holmes also addressed the use of medications at the end-of-life to an engaged audience at the recent AAHPM meeting in Nashville, TN.
Dr. Boustani is an assistant professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine and a Beeson scholar. His research at the Regenstrief Institute focuses on the use of information technology in geriatrics and dementia. In his article, he outlines key issues in information technology and we anxiously await the results of his study.
Dr. Hazzard, professor at University of Washington School of Medicine, discusses the future of geriatric medicine in his article "Playing Wave Tag with the Aging Tsunami: Preparing Geriatricians for Leadership to Meet the Challenge."
Finally, on the policy front, there is exciting news that the Specter-Harkin amendment passed, protecting much needed funding for geriatric education.
Once again, please to not hesitate to contact me regarding your concerns. I look forward to welcoming you to Chicago for the AGS conference in the spring!
Sincerely,
Rachelle Bernacki, MD
