Mentoring: A Vital Activity for Junior Faculty and Fellows

The first one-on-one mentoring activity for Geriatrics Fellows was conducted at the 1996 AGS/AFAR Annual Meeting in Chicago. The AGS is pleased to continue this successful program at its 1999 Annual Meeting. Over 35 Fellows and Junior Faculty are expected to meet with Mentors during the this year’s AGS/AFAR Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.

The format for the mentoring activity at this year’s AGS meeting is once again modeled after a highly successful mentoring program conducted by the Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM). It has proven to be an excellent opportunity for Fellows to meet with nationally prominent geriatricians to discuss career goals, projects, and other topics. Mentoring pairs are matched according to interest areas, but have no set meeting agenda. The meetings are scheduled to last one hour, but have been known to extend longer. In some cases, Mentor/Fellow relationships have continued past the initial meeting to additional telephone, email or face-to-face conversations.

Participating Fellows and Junior Faculty have already been matched with Mentors from AGS committees and the Board of Directors.
