THE JOHN HEINZ SENATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN ISSUES OF THE AGING
The John Heinz Senate Fellowship Program is designed to identify and train new leaders in issues affecting children and seniors. Intended as a career development opportunity for mid-level professionals, the program will provide first-hand knowledge in the development and advancement of public policy and legislation that will improve the quality of life for our young and, in alternate years, for older Americans. The program was created in 1992 to honor the memory of the late United States Senator John Heinz, who spent much of his Congressional career as an outspoken advocate for the rights of older Americans and for the protection, health, welfare and education of children. Each year, the Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Program (CHLP) honors ten outstanding individuals for their work in creating or enhancing healthcare programs serving communities whose needs have been ignored and unmet. Each leader receives $100,000, which includes a $5,000 personal stipend and $95,000 for program enhancement over a 3-year period. CHLP seeks out individuals who have the leadership skills to overcome complex obstacles and find creative ways to bring healthcare services to their communities. All are largely unrecognized and in "mid-career," most often with no less than five and no more than 15 years of community health work experience. The nomination process is open and nominations can be made by consumers, community health leaders, health professionals, and government officials who have been inspired personally by the nominees. THE ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION has announced a $6.3 million two-program national diabetes initiative intended to address patient self-management.
"Advancing Diabetes Self-Management" will award up to six fifteen-month grants of $300,000 will to primary care provider organizations to work as a network to develop and pilot test multi-component, self-management programs in primary care settings. "Building Community Supports for Diabetes Care" will provide up to eight twelve-month grants of $125,000 to community-provider partnerships to address diabetes prevention and self-management issues in communities where cultural and ethic diversity strongly influence related health behaviors. UCLA GERIATRIC MEDICAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM, sponsored by the UCLA School of Medicine, Multicampus Program in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology (MPGMG), offers a one-year fellowship that prepares physicians to function effectively in medical direction, with a special emphasis on long-term care facility management. Applicants must have a California physician's license, be committed to a career in geriatric medical management, and have completed at least one year in an accredited geriatric fellowship program or be board certified or eligible in internal or family medicine. Training cycles may begin annually in July or January.
