Career Development

Firsthand exposure to geriatrics can help students to evaluate career choices. Not every student who expresses an interest in the student group will actually become involved in geriatrics as the sole focus of his or her career. Many will choose subspecialties of internal medicine, family practice, surgery or its subspecialties. Spending a day with a physician who has special interest in caring for older patients can help group members to evaluate the various career options. Members of the group can usually arrange these experiences informally with guidance from their faculty advisor. A day with a physician can take a variety of forms depending on the resources of the school and the physicians willing to participate. Some ideas to look into are:

Physicians or other health care professionals who have a sizeable geriatric patient population, but who are not solely geriatricians. Their specialties may include:

Cardiology Orthopedics
Endocrinology Physical Therapy
Internal Medicine Podiatry
Nephrology Psychiatry
Neurology Pulmonology
Nutrition Surgery

Physicians who treat predominantly geriatric patients in:

  • nursing homes
  • geriatric outpatient clinics
  • geriatric inpatient units
  • geriatric evaluation units
  • hospices
  • specialized housing for the elderly
