From a single hour presentation to a multi-day course, the
educational programs offered by the student group can be designed to meet
whatever needs the group identifies. It is no revelation to state that
more speakers mean more work. A program can feature one main speaker,
who might be invited to speak on a solo basis for a one-half day conference.
This format can be expanded to include the keynote speaker plus several
local experts in a combination lecture/discussion presentation. From there,
the sky is the limit with students inviting several nationally known figures
to participate in a full-day conference. The faculty advisor can play
an important role in helping the group to select the general theme and
format of the conference. Some basic topics are:
- The Impact of an Aging Population: Social and economic
considerations in the provision of health care
- The Future of Geriatric Medicine: Patient demands, research
issues, medical and legal interfaces
- The Economics of Long-Term Health Care: Where does the
money go now and how should that system be changed in the future?
- Ethical Dilemmas: Balancing the heeds of the patient
with the restraints of society
- Disuse Syndromes: How much function is lost because of
simple disuse as opposed to the process of disease and aging?
- Exercise and the Healthy Older Person: The role of exercise
in maintaining or regaining health
- latrogenic Disease and the Elderly: Why is it prevalent
among the elderly and how can the sensitive physician minimize secondary
illnesses?
