Social Activities

The social encounters of the student geriatric group serve two main functions. One is to encourage peer support. The second is to provide a relaxed atmosphere for exchange between practicing geriatricians, faculty interested in geriatrics, and students. Families can be encouraged to attend to enhance support and encouragement for group members. Potluck dinners, picnics, and wine tasting parties can provide the basic structure for an afternoon or evening gathering. It is helpful to see professional role models interact with family members and other professionals. Learning to be a physician should not obliterate all other personal pleasures; however, this balance, like all others, is a learned, not an instinctual phenomenon.
