Electives for the clinical years can also take a variety of forms, limited
only by the resources of the institution and the creativity of the faculty
involved. Clinical electives should provide students with a variety of
settings in which to interact with elderly patients. Electives are typically
intensive experiences of 4-6 weeks. The student gradually assumes more
responsibility for patient care and has the opportunity to discuss pertinent
issues in geriatric medicine in greater detail. Clinical training sites
may include:
- Outpatient clinics
- General medicine wards
- Hospices
- Adult day care centers
- Geriatric evaluation units
- Nursing homes
As in the preclinical years, third- and fourth-year students should
have the opportunity to interact with other health care professionals,
and should also have a chance to participate in primary patient care.
