Geriatrics in the Curriculum

The facts are impressive regarding the medical imperative for physicians to obtain geriatric training. But these statistics are not enough to motivate most students to enroll in elective courses and participate in educational activities that focus on geriatrics. Faculty members with an interest in caring for the elderly can be a key element in encouraging students to explore geriatric medicine.

Encouragement can be as simple as asking a student to participate in a geriatric clinic or to accompany the faculty member on a visit to a nursing home. While these activities may be simple, they sensitize students to the health care needs of older persons. This is a central goal of geriatric education.
