American Academy of Nursing Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Predoctoral Scholarship Program (with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City and the Atlantic Philanthropies)
Level: For registered Nurses who hold degrees(s) in nursing and are US citizens or permanent U.S. residents, committed to careers in academic geriatric nursing
Award Information: two-year awards are for up to $100,000 ($50,000/year). Support will go to tuition and fees and up to $30,000 in stipend for each of two years for a total of up to $50,000 per year. Applicants are predoctoral candidates who will commence or continue education beginning July 1 or no later than September 1.
Description: The BAGNC focuses on the development of academic leadership in gerontological nursing through study; working with scholars, mentors and colleagues in other fields: completion and write-up of a research project that is designed to improve the health and well-being of older adults and their caregivers; and by success in achieving funding from other sources. Scholars will work with a mentor/advisor they identify to design and implement an individual professional development plan that will support them in their research

American Academy of Nursing Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Masters in Business Administration Scholarship Program (with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City and the Atlantic Philanthropies)
Level: For registered Nurses who hold degrees(s) in nursing and are U.S citizens or permanent U.S. residents, committed to careers in academic geriatric nursing applicants wishing to pursue a business degree at a highly ranked school of business, anticipating a career focus on the management/leadership of institutions serving the elderly.
Award Information: The program provides a total of $50,000 in support, which may be used over a one or two-year period. It is designed for successful candidates who will commence or continue education by July 1 or, when requested, no later than September 1.
Description: The program is designed to support applicants wishing to pursue a Masters in Business Administration or related degree at a highly ranked school of business, anticipating a career focus on the management/leadership of institutions serving the elderly. Applicants must have been accepted to, or be currently enrolled in, a highly ranked business school. The BAGNC focuses on the development of academic leadership in gerontological nursing through study; working with scholars, mentors and colleagues in other fields: completion and write-up of a research project that is designed to improve the health and well-being of older adults and their caregivers; and by success in achieving funding from other sources. The applicant must establish a relationship with a faculty member in gerontological nursing who will serve as a mentor during the candidate's grant program.

American Academy of Nursing Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Claire M. Fagin Post-Doctoral Fellowship Awards Program (with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City and the Atlantic Philanthropies)
Level: nurses and doctoral students who have completed their doctoral study prior to the award; members in accredited Schools of Nursing who hold the rank of assistant professor or associate professor may apply for fellowships; and full professors who offer compelling cases for either strengthening or redirecting their interest to gerontological nursing or increasing their research skills in the field, will all be considered. Applicants are registered Nurses who hold degrees(s) in nursing and are U.S citizens or permanent U.S. residents, committed to careers in academic geriatric nursing
Award Information: two-year awards provide $60,000 of support for each of 2 years (for a total of $120,000) of advanced research training and mentorship designed to assist doctorally-prepared nurses committed to faculty careers in geriatric nursing. The Mayday Fund provides an additional $5,000 award to selected candidates whose research includes the study of pain in the elderly.

Atlantic Philanthropies, Division of Health Care Policy and Research at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, and National Council on Aging Practice Change Fellows Program: Enhancing Leadership in Geriatric Care
Level: Nurses, physicians, and social workers are eligible to apply
Award Information: Up to ten Practice Change Fellows are selected through a national competition. Selected Fellows receive $90,000 over the two-year program and work with accomplished national mentors to design, implement, and evaluate a new project.
Description: The program develops leadership capacity in healthcare professionals who have operational responsibility for aging-related program or geriatric service lines.

Pfizer Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nursing Research
Level: Registered nurses who have earned a doctoral degree after 1995
Award Information: 2 grants of $65,000 per year for 2 years
Description: Applicants must have arranged to conduct the proposed research through an educational institution, a private research facility, or government agency in the U.S. with a mentor who has a strong research and academic record. The mentor should have expertise and interest in the proposed research.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Nurse Faculty Scholars Program
Level: junior faculty members with at least two but no more than five years of experience in a faculty role.
Award Information: The program will award up to $350,000 for three years to 15 scholars each year. Candidates who completed their doctoral degree within 10 years of receiving their initial nursing degree are encouraged to apply.
Description: The foundation will award $28 million to outstanding junior nursing faculty - over the next five years - to help them advance in their fields and seek faculty positions earlier in their careers. Participants in the program will develop a research program and other academic activities, work closely with institutional and national mentors, and network with other scholars, experts, and colleagues in their field as well as related fields.

Level: for students enrolled in a BSN, master's or doctoral degree program in nursing at an AACN member school
Award Information: $2,500
Description: special consideration goes to students enrolled in a master's or doctoral program with the goal of pursuing a nursing faculty career, or who are completing an RN-to-BSN program or are enrolled in an accelerated baccalaureate or master's degree nursing program.

Students are placed with various AACN staff with experience in health policy, quality/patient safety, nursing education, geriatric nursing, or end of life care. Level: underrepresented minority graduate students who intend to pursue careers as nurse educators
Award Information: $18,000 plus mentorship and leadership training

Army ROTC Nurse Program Scholarships

Level: Local or regional private, independent, family or community foundations and public charities
Award Information: Program can provide approximately 10 awards of up to $250,000 each. Local foundations and other partners must match awards with at least $1 for every $2 provided by this program.
Description: The program addresses nursing issues at the community level through funding partnerships with local and regional foundations. Projects will be chosen based on innovation and strength; sustainability; potential impact in the local or regional area; scope and strength of the partnership between the local foundation and its partners; and foundation capacity for and commitment to addressing nursing issues. Projects will last up to 24 months (effective September 2008—September 2010).

The Oregon Department of Human Services Seniors and People with Disabilities Division and the OHSU School of Nursing John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence's Wound Care and Prevention of Pressure Ulcers Scholarship
Level: Registered nurses with Baccalaureate degrees who are (1) currently employed in a nursing facility licensed by the State of Oregon or (2) provide significant consultation to nursing facility staff
Award Information: $2,000 each for awardees who wish to obtain Wound Care Certification. Facilities consulting organizations must provide matching funds for completion of coursework and certification. Applicants must make a commitment to practice pressure ulcer prevention and treatment after certification.
Description: The award is committed to reducing the prevalence and severity of skin wounds among residents of licensed nursing facilities

The American Academy of Nursing (AAN)/ANF/IOM Scholar-in-Residence Program
Level: Nurse scholars
Award Information: An annual stipend of $50,000 (plus the IOM orientation costs of $4000), an office at IOM with appropriate supports (e.g., computer, phone, access to a printer, access to software programs and library resources), and a two-month orientation in federal health policy formation
Description: Encourages continued leadership development in Fellows by providing Scholars the opportunity to experience nursing policy from within the IOM. The program provides a full-time yearlong leadership opportunity in health policy at the Institute of Medicine (IOM), The National Academies. It is designed as an immersion experience to facilitate nurse leaders playing a more prominent role in health policy development at the national level.
