Award Information: This is a companion grant program to the National Institute on Aging RO3 award: Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Subspecialists. The GEMSSTAR award is an early career award with the goal of helping researchers establish a research track record in the field of geriatrics research while at once (via supplemental funding) nurturing their academic career though formal class room education or other means of career development. The T. Franklin Williams Scholars Program is one of several career development awards that will offer supplemental funding (matching) mechanism to the GEMSSTAR award.
Description: The National Institute on Aging's (NIA) GEMSSTAR awards support early career physicians trained in medical and surgical subspecialties through an RO3 mechanism that will provide up to $100,000 in direct costs over two years for research on the geriatrics aspects of their specialty. This new award requires some level of supplemental funding (match) as explained in the RFA. The T. Franklin Williams Scholars (TFWS) program provides a matching career development award that provides applicants with $50,000 over two years. These funds are interdependent and derived from the Association of Specialty Professors (ASP) and the AGS Foundation for Health in Aging (FHA). The TFWS will be offered only to those individuals approved for funding by the NIA via the GEMSSTAR Program and approved by the TFWS committee, which will conduct a review simultaneous with that of the NIA.
