Changes in Requirements for the Geriatrics Recognition Award

The Joint Subcommittee on the Geriatrics Recognition Award (GRA) has approved two modifications to the requirements for earning the award.

The first change is the decision that passing the recertification examination for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatric Medicine (CAQ GM) is acceptable as a CME activity for receiving the GRA. An applicant can simply send a copy of the certificate stating that he/she passed the recertification examination. The application fee of $25 for AGS members and $50 for non-members for the GRA will still apply.

The subcommittee also agreed to accept CME credits earned from a geriatrics fellowship training program for the GRA under the 25 (or fewer) credits from programs not sponsored, co-sponsored or endorsed by the AGS. Thus physicians who received CME credits from completing a fellowship program in geriatrics are encouraged to use those credits to apply for the GRA.

The AGS launched the GRA in May 1996 to encourage physicians and Nurses to acquire additional knowledge and skills in geriatrics through continuing medical education (CME) programs. Physicians who have earned 125 CME credits and nurses who have earned 150 nursing contact hours or 125 CME credits from geriatrics programs over four years may apply for the GRA.
