AGS Accepting Applications for Applications are now available for the Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents (GSR) program. The program is part of the AGS' larger John A. Hartford Foundation-funded Geriatrics-for-Specialists Initiative (GSI), which focuses on better preparing surgeons and other medical specialists to meet the unique healthcare needs of the nation's growing population of older adults. GSR grants support collaborative efforts between specialty faculty and geriatrics programs at their institutions to develop, initiate and evaluate model educational programs integrating geriatrics into surgical and related specialty residency training. The GSR program and other GSI initiatives focus on 10 disciplines: anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery and urology. Up to 25 two-year grants of $20,000 per year ($40,000, total), over the two year period will be awarded to institutions submitting promising proposals. No funds will be provided in support of indirect costs. New this year is a mentoring program geared toward re-applicants and smaller specialty residency training programs that may want assistance in preparing their applications. The goal of the mentoring program is to enhance the capacity of these residency programs to compete more effectively for GSR funds. Completed applications are due March 2, 2008. Grant recipients will be announced June 2. For more information, please visit http://www.americangeriatrics.org/specialists/gsr_program.shtml |
