What will Title VII Receive in Funding in FY 2008?
Title VII Geriatrics Health Professions Programs will receive approximately $31 million in federal funds in fiscal year (FY) 2008 -- about 1.7% less than the $31.5 million appropriated for the programs in FY 2007. Funding was approved under a $555 billion omnibus budget package the President signed December 26. Before the omnibus package was passed, Title VII FY 2008 funding had been extended through December 21, 2007 by a 3rd Continuing Resolution (CR) signed by the President on December 14 (the first CR, signed in late September, approved funding for the first 7 weeks of FY 2008 and a 2nd approved funding through December 14, 2007. The CRs maintained funding for federal programs at 2007 levels.

What is the Current Status of Title VII Funding for FY 2009?
On February 4th, President Bush proposed a $3.1 trillion budget, which would eliminate all funding for Title VII Health Professions Programs - including Geriatrics Training Programs. The President's budget proposal is only a blue-print. Ultimately, Congress appropriates funds in its lengthy budget process. AGS will continue to advocate for Title VII Geriatrics Health Professions Programs funding for FY 2009.

What is AGS' position on Title VII Funding?
The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) strongly endorses efforts to support Title VII of the Public Health Service Act. Title VII funding is critical to geriatric faculty fellowships, GACA and GEC initiatives, which are the only federal programs designed to address access to quality healthcare, improve diversity of the healthcare workforce and recruit and retain health care professionals in medically underserved areas. Furthermore, Title VII funding for geriatrics training specifically addresses the evident geriatrician shortage in the U.S. and serves to educate academic geriatricians at this crucial period. AGS' briefing on Title VII serves to inform policymakers and geriatrics health care providers about the impact of this funding on the provision of care for the aging population and what is at stake if this funding is eliminated.
