Jennie Chin Hansen Delivers Keynote Address at Fifth Annual Norman and Alicia Volk Lecture on Geriatric Nursing

April 26th, 2013

AGS CEO Jennie Chin Hansen delivered the keynote address at the Fifth Annual Norman and Alicia Volk Lecture on Geriatric Nursing at NYU College of Nursing this week. Hansen’s talk focused on the rapidly changing context of healthcare today—and where it needs to go in the future to meet societal needs. She also spoke to the democratization of knowledge and information among providers, patients, and caregivers, with the frame of “what matters to you” and not just “what’s the matter with you” (a core geriatrics value of honoring a person’s goals and preferences), quoting Susan Edgman-Levitan of Mass General Hospital. Hansen also cited the UK Parliament’s 2012 report All the Talents: How New Roles and Better Teamwork Can Release Potential and Improve Health Services. Finally, she noted examples of “game changers” that are occurring now by non-health providers/systems that are addressing needs of workforce, care coaching, consumer engagement and technology. This annual lecture is made possible through the generous support of Norman and Alicia Volk. Mr. Volk serves as Chairman of the Board for the John A. Hartford Foundation, which advocates health care training and research to provide effective and affordable care to the nation’s rapidly increasing older population.
