American Geriatrics Society Names Gail Sullivan, MD, 2013 Dennis W. Jahnigen Memorial Award Recipient

NEW YORK — The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) will present Gail Sullivan, MD, MPH with the 2013 Dennis W. Jahnigen Memorial Award on Saturday, May 4, 2013, during its Annual Scientific Meeting. Dr. Sullivan is Professor of Medicine, Associate Director for Education & Program Director, Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the UConn Center on Aging, University of Connecticut School of Medicine. This prestigious award is given annually to an AGS member who has provided outstanding leadership training students in geriatrics and has contributed significantly to the progress of geriatrics education in health professions schools.
Dr. Sullivan is a dedicated and highly effective advocate for geriatrics education. At the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Dr. Sullivan has built programs from the ground up introducing, expanding, and evaluating geriatric medicine training for medical students, residents and practicing physicians. To accomplish this training, Dr. Sullivan developed syllabus readings, clinical experiences, conferences, and assessment instruments. Her work has set the standard for nationally recognized educational competencies in the field.
“Dr. Sullivan is an accomplished physician and exemplary teacher,” said C. Seth Landefeld, MD, Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama. “She is an extraordinary role model and an inspiration to geriatrics professionals across the country who seek careers as educators.”
Dr. Sullivan joined the AGS in 1985 and has been on the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society editorial board since 1998. For the last six years, Dr. Sullivan has served as co-editor-in-chief of the AGS Geriatrics Review Syllabus. Dr. Sullivan is currently a member of the AGS Professional Education Executive Committee and is a senior advisor to AGS Public Education Committee. In June 2010, Dr. Sullivan became the first Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education.
About the Dennis W. Jahnigen Memorial Award
Dennis W. Jahnigen, MD (1947-1998), was acclaimed as an extraordinary teacher, receiving numerous awards from students and faculty throughout his career. In 1998, the AGS awarded him the Milo D. Leavitt Award to recognize his distinguished career in geriatrics education. Dr. Jahnigen’s clinical skills and heartfelt, compassionate concern for older adults continues to flourish in the many health professionals who benefited from his teaching and mentorship.
