Anesthesiology

  • Completion and analysis of need assessment survey. July-August, 2008
  • Identification of faculty and residents with interest in Geriatrics to participate in the project. July, 2008
  • Delineation of specific topics to include in each module based on proposal and needs assessment
  • Assignment of topics for development to faculty and residents. August-December, 2008.
  • Creation of a Geriatrics section in our web-based education system were our module content as well as links to important articles and websites available to all members of the department. April, 2009
  • First Geriatrics month. May, 2009, this will include:
    1. Grand Rounds
    2. 6 Lectures on resident lecture series from modules
    3. One simulation session
    4. Addition of Geriatric station to OSCE exam
    5. Pre and post tests
  • Evaluation impact of intervention after Geriatric month based on pre and post tests, simulation scenarios, OSCE, faculty survey and self evaluation. June, 2009

  • To prepare lecture series covering primary Geriatrics knowledge and secondary application of this knowledge to surgical patients.
  • To prepare interactive evaluation tools to test resident knowledge and effectiveness of lectures at expanding resident knowledge.
  • To survey and evaluate feedback from residents on effectiveness of lecture content and style. In year 2, improvements will be incorporated and lectures subsequently converted to online modules.

Ophthalmology

Nancy E. Awender, MD
Summa Health System
Geriatrician: Kyle R. Allen, DO

  • Form a collaboration between Department of Ophthalmology and Division of Geriatric Medicine in order to create a series of lectures to educate Ophthalmology residents about special issues relevant to Geriatric patients with eye disease. A minimum of four to six lectures incorporating the principles set forth by the Interdisciplinary Leadership Group's (ILG) Statement of Principles will be designed to be given in a structured series.
  • Prior to the initiation of the series, residents will be administered baseline knowledge and attitudes tests (UCLA Geriatrics Survey, Maxwell-Sullivan Test and the University of Michigan Geriatrics Knowledge Test). The results of these tests will be tabulated and compiled.
  • Compile and classify a large collection of quality stereoscopic retinal fundus photographs that represent a variety of pathologies found in Geriatric patients. Once these are classified, they will be placed online using 3D software. Develop pre-and post tests on these retinal pathologies.

  • Create an innovative series of web-based simulated geriatric patients who are cared for by an eye specialist.
  • Supplement then write post-web evaluation, case-based small group discussions with a geriatrician.
  • Pilot this curriculum on the Ophthalmology residents training at the MetroHealth system.

Orthopaedic Surgery

  • Addition of lectures to the didactic curriculum to expand residents' geriatric knowledge pertinent to orthopaedic care
  • Addition of 2 integrated conferences focused on improvement of care of older adults
  • Dr. Charles Weiss will be invited to give a guest lecture on Geriatric Care of Orthopaedic Patients
  • Initiation of development of a web-based simulated patient focused on geriatric issues in a patient with a hip fracture

Urology

Joseph Basler, MD

Geriatrician: Elizabeth Glazier, MD

  • Begin the requirement process of mandatory attendance to pertinent conferences, such as a weekly ethics conference, a palliative care conference, and a multi-disciplinary GU tumor board all centered on Geriatric medicine into the residents monthly conference schedule
  • To purchase the textbook, Geriatrics Syllabus for Specialists for all residents. We will also disburse pocket cards which are currently available and will include, Approach to Older Patients, common Drug Side Effects, GAYF, Cognitive and Emotional Status Evaluations
  • To host a one day symposium with invited faculty from the Departments of Urology, Oncology, Geriatrics, Psychiatry and Anesthesiology to give didactic sessions pertinent to caring for the elder patients in Urological settings.
  • We will begin creating and engaging in pre and post-test questionnaires of all of our joint activities.
  • Introduction of Geriatrics conference component to take place once a month for 1 hour to specifically review chapters from the textbook as well as current issues in Geriatric Medicine solely for the residents and taught by the PI and Co-PI on the grant.
  • To begin monthly meetings between Dr. Glazier and Basler and the coordinator, Beth Payne, to begin the implementation process of this newly developed Geriatrics curriculum and the use of funds to ensure success.

Philipp Dahm, MD, MHSc
University of Florida and Gainesville VA
Geriatrician: Ron Shorr, MD

  • To develop and implement a curriculum of didactic educational activities (lectures, journal club, guest lecture by visiting professor) to teach UF Urology residents the fundamental principles of Geriatric Medicine.
  • To institute a clinical rotation for second year Urology residents at the Gainesville VA Medical center that provides them with hands-on exposure to Geriatric patient care.
