Section for Surgical and Related Medical Specialties

MISSION: To enhance the well being of older patients who suffer from diseases and conditions requiring treatment by specialists in surgical and related medical specialties.


ABOUT THE SECTION
Officially established in 2002, the American Geriatrics Society's Section for Surgical and Related Medical Specialties presents an annual educational and research meeting in conjunction with the AGS, facilitates the exchange of information between specialists and geriatricians, and provides direction and oversight to the AGS/John A. Hartford Foundation project, Increasing Geriatrics Expertise in Surgical and Related Medical Specialties (Geriatrics-for-Specialists). The Section's mission is to enhance the well being of older patients who suffer from diseases and conditions requiring treatment by specialists in surgical and related medical specialties.

The goals of the Section are to:
  • To strengthen geriatrics education for all trainees in the following specialties: anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, urology
  • To facilitate sharing of ideas, information, and goodwill between geriatricians and specialists and among specialties.
  • To stimulate the career development of faculty in promoting geriatrics training and research within his/her own professional disciplines.
  • To foster the development of research on aging in the surgical and related medical specialties
The Seventh Annual Meeting of the Section for Surgical and Related Medical Specialties will be presented on May 3, 2008, at the Marriott Wardman Park, Washington, DC
