Program Overview

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS), through a program funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation entitled Geriatrics-for-Specialists Initiative (GSI), seeks proposals for specialty-specific initiatives from training centers to develop, initiate and evaluate programs designed to increase education for residents in the geriatrics aspect of the following disciplines: anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery and urology.

Designed to improve the amount and quality of geriatric education received by medical and surgical residents, the Geriatrics for Specialty Residents (GSR) program provides small grant support to bring geriatrics expertise into residency programs. Through support for specialty-specific initiatives, interested specialists work in collaboration with the geriatrics program in their institution to develop, initiate and evaluate programs designed to increase education for residents in the geriatrics aspect of their disciplines.

Up to 25 two-year grants of $20,000 per year ($40,000 total over the two year program) will be awarded to institutions that demonstrate in their proposals the most promise for success. No funds will be provided in support of indirect costs.

Geriatrics for Residents in the Surgical and Medical Specialties: Implementation of Curricula and Training Experiences (Potter JF, Burton JR, et al. Geriatrics for Residents in the Surgical and Medical Specialties: Implementation of Curricula and Training Experiences. J Am Geriatr Soc 2005; 53: 511-515. ) provides an overview of the work accomplished by past recipients of Geriatrics for Specialty Residents grants.
