Council Representatives
The Council of the Section of Surgical and Related Medical Specialties is a part of the AGS. It is a working unit of national specialty leaders committed to improving the care of geriatric patients. The Section presents an annual educational and research meeting in collaboration with the AGS meeting each May. The meetings are designed to enhance the exchange of information between specialists and geriatricians. The following are members of the council from orthopaedic surgery:

Participating Organizations
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) provides education and practice management services for orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals. The Academy also serves as an advocate for improved patient care and informs the public about the science of orthopaedics. http://www.aaos.org/
The Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) is an organization dedicated to advancement of orthopaedic research. The ORS carries out this mission through education in research, dissemination of research knowledge, advocacy for increasing of resources for research, and increasing awareness of the importance and impact of such research on orthopaedic patients and the public. Additionally, the ORS promotes and encourages the development and availability of clinician-scientists and basic-scientists to assure that there is continuing research efforts whose results will form a basis for providing the highest quality of musculoskeletal care. http://www.ors.org/

Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars
These competitive two-year awards of $75,000 per year (plus a required minimum institutional support of $25,000 per year) are designed to support education and research training for specialty faculty who seek to launch academic careers in the geriatric aspect of their specialty. Supported by The John A. Hartford Foundation and The Atlantic Philanthropies, the Jahnigen Program is a key component in our efforts to enhance perioperative care of older adults. New Investigator Recognition Award (NIRA)
Since 1998, the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) has offered the new investigator recognition awards that recognize outstanding work in Orthopaedic research to young investigators. One of the ten awards given out each year is sponsored by the American Geriatrics Society.
