- Free access to My AGS. My AGS is an exciting new interactive internet-based tool offered exclusively to members of the American Geriatrics Society. This service provides users with a number of web capabilities and enhanced member benefits, such as exchanging ideas and clinical opinions with other geriatric professionals around the world.
- Monthly communications via monthly member mailings updating them on the latest AGS news and noteworthy activities.
- Communication as often as twice a month through the AGS list serv. Close to 3,000 members are a part of this service.
- Involvement in public policy issues through the Society's Washington office and grassroots advocacy by state affiliates and AGS members
For example, we worked closely with Senators Lincoln (D-AR) and Reid (D-NV) and Congressman Green (D-TX) on the reintroduction of the Geriatric Care Act earlier this year. Passage of this bill during the 108th Congress remains one of the Society's top legislative priorities.
In addition to provisions providing for a new Medicare benefit for geriatric assessment and care coordination services and an exception to the hospital based GME cap for geriatric fellowship training programs, this year's bill also contains language clarifying that geriatric training programs are eligible for two years of fellowship support under GME, as provided for under the Social Security Act. S. 387/H.R. 102.
- The AGS has also worked to finalize a coverage proposal regarding geriatric assessment to be presented to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which was presented to CMS in October of 2002. CMS is now in the early stages of considering the proposal.
