AGS/AFAR ClinSTAR CC/NIA Virtual Workshops

As part of the Clinician Specialists’ Rising Stars in Aging Research Mentoring Program, The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is pleased to have hosted virtual workshops in partnership with the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) Clinician-Scientists Trandisciplinary Aging Research Coordinating Center (Clin-STAR CC) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA).

Geared towards early career investigators but open to all, these workshops range in topics from NIA grant writing, how to respond to summary statements, the review process and more. Full descriptions for each workshop along with links to the recordings are below.

Building a Robust Mentorship Team when Applying for Funding in Aging

This workshop is the final recording of a three-part series geared toward early career investigators. Previous GEMSSTAR scholars provide viewers with strategies for using time efficiently with a mentor and tips on building a robust aging-focused mentorship team.

This workshop provides an overview of an NIH summary statement, tips on how to respond to common critiques, and real-life examples from two GEMSSTAR scholars on their approach to their summary statement which ultimately led to successfully receiving grant funding.

Virtual Workshop with NIA Staff

This workshop provides an overview of the NIA and an introduction to the NIH grant process from NIA leaders. Topics were focused on those applying for a GEMSSTAR Award, but are relevant to all early career investigators who are applying for funding. In the workshop, the NIA team covers: grant-writing, the review process, resubmissions and professional/career development plans.
