In a newly released article in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS), AGS CEO Nancy E. Lundebjerg and AGS member leaders, Drs. Peter Abadir, Megan Young, Helen Fernandez, and Eric Widera, share the historical context of Geriatric Medicine and recent examples of the expertise and value that geriatrics health professionals have made, are making, and will make well into the future. Highlighting the interconnectivity that encompasses geriatrics, this paper presents ways in which the specialty thrives across disciplines, systems, and settings of care – all with a focus on ensuring the utmost quality in care for older adults. As the paper states, Geriatrics is the future of medicine. Read the article here.
One of our current advocacy priorities is addressing the expiration of telehealth flexibilities. We are asking you to call your elected officials and ask them to extend the telehealth flexibilities that have lapsed, including coverage of audio-only services. Clinicians who provide telehealth services to Medicare patients are once again facing uncertainty as the temporary Medicare telehealth rules that have been in place since March 2020 have expired as of October 1st. There was hope that Congress would pass legislation to extend them or make them permanent as part of a measure to keep the government funded into Fiscal Year (FY) 2026, but Congress was unable to agree on a funding package.
This week, AGS submitted comments on a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed rule that would, if finalized, set a fixed-term admission period for F and J visa holders, including international academic students and physicians. This change would replace the current “duration of status” rule which lets F and J visa holders stay the duration of their program. In our letter, we expressed concern about the impact this will have on international academic students and physicians and access to health care, especially for those in underserved areas. AGS urges DHS to not move forward with its implementation. Our full comment letter can be found here.

The AGS Research Committee invites you to help shape the outcome of the 2026 Virtual Annual Meeting by volunteering to review research abstracts in your area of expertise! The success of the peer review process depends on the willingness of qualified reviewers to share their time and expertise. Your experience and knowledge will enable you to provide helpful advice to the Research Committee on the merits of abstracts and constructive comments to submitters that can strengthen their future submissions.
To become an Abstract Reviewer, you must meet the criteria listed below, submit a biosketch (NIH- style, 5 pages maximum) and complete the short application form at this link to identify your areas of expertise and the abstract submission category you wish to review. The deadline to apply as an abstract reviewer for the AGS 2026 Virtual Annual Meeting is November 28th.
Abstract Reviewer Criteria:
- must have first-authored two or more peer-reviewed original manuscripts
- must have advanced degree training (MD, PhD, MPH, PharmD, MS, etc.) or equivalent non-clinical health care degree
If you are accepted as an abstract reviewer, you will be asked to review approximately 40 abstracts in the category (s) noted on your application. The review process will begin December 5, 2025, and all reviews must be completed by January 5, 2026. We are hopeful that you are available to work with us on this very important part of our meeting.
