AGS has released an updated position statement focused on advancing the healthcare of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and more (LGBTQI+) older adults. By building upon the 2015 position statement of the same topic, AGS seeks to support progress on eliminating discrimination against LGBTQI+ older adults in healthcare as well as to support the integration of evidence-based approaches to caring for these older adults across care settings. The updated statement addresses ongoing health disparities and barriers to care while outlining recommendations for education, policy, and research. We encourage you to read the full statement here: https://agsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jgs.70470.
We are excited to announce that Hackensack University Medical Center has achieved Recognized AGS CoCare®: HELP Site status! Hackensack University Medical Center first implemented the Hospital Elder Life Program model in 2008, and has since established a strong track record of improving care for older adults. Building on this longstanding success, they recently expanded their commitment to the program through dedicated staffing and advancing age-friendly hospital care. AGS CoCare®: HELP Site Recognition is granted to institutions who have demonstrated a commitment to the AGS CoCare®: HELP program and have excelled in carrying out the protocols to improve the care for hospitalized older patients. Congratulations to the Hackensack University Medical Center team on this achievement.

AGS is pleased to announce that the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) will be added to OpenEvidence under a new strategic partnership between Wiley, our JAGS publishing partner, and OpenEvidence. “AGS has long championed the importance of improving healthcare professionals’ knowledge and skills if we are to improve healthcare for older adults,” said AGS President, Alison Moore, MD, MPH, FACP, AGSF. “Including JAGS in OpenEvidence will integrate geriatrics evidence into clinical care at the bedside. Ultimately, we believe this will lead to improved care for all of us as we age.” The Wiley/Open Evidence collaboration will provide physicians who use Open Evidence with access to more than 400 journals, books, and resources at the point of care. Learn more about the collaboration between OpenEvidence and Wiley here.
AGS is seeking passionate and engaged leaders to help shape the future of AGS and the field of geriatrics through service on the AGS Board. We encourage members to nominate themselves or others whose expertise, experience, and commitment would strengthen the Society’s leadership.

Use the AGS/ADGAP Compensation & Productivity Benchmarking Tool to compare yourself and practice against your peers, track key metrics, and leverage those insights to negotiate, grow, and stay competitive. This tool is exclusively available to AGS and ADGAP geriatrician members who complete the 2026 AGS/ADGAP Compensation & Productivity Survey.
Log in with your AGS credentials to complete the survey – it only takes 10-15 minutes (and even less if you completed it last year). The more members who complete the survey, the richer and more robust the data will be for you to use.
For more information, including data snapshots from prior years, click here.
Your use of the Data Platform is free and secure. Survey data collected is not linked to you in any way – all the data collected will remain anonymous.
AGS member Michael Steinman, MD, AGSF, was recently featured in an Association of American Medical Colleges article on polypharmacy in older adults. In the article, Dr. Steinman and other experts discuss the importance of deprescribing—the process of reducing or stopping medications that may no longer be necessary or could cause harm—and highlight the need for clinician education, research, and health system support to help optimize medication use for older adults. Read the full article here.
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is streamlining the way in which staff, faculty, and researchers employed at VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) can access programs and network with peers. Given that these changes may impact geriatric academic programs and GRECCS, we wanted to make you aware of the upcoming changes. Specifically, the AAMC will no longer maintain a dues-paying federal membership category for VA Medical Centers starting July 1, 2026. Instead, they are planning to launch (in two phases) a new option for any VAMC having an academic affiliation agreement with an AAMC member institution for GME.
- Phase I (beginning July 1, 2026): Eligible VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) with a 2026 AAMC membership and a GME affiliation agreement with an AAMC-member institution will request access to AAMC benefits, including access to affinity groups, member publication pricing, and leadership program opportunities at no cost.
- Phase II (coming later in 2026): These same benefits will be expanded to all VAMCs with a GME academic affiliation agreement with an AAMC-member institution.
If you have any questions or require further information, please feel free to reach out to jjaffery@aamc.org.
- Submit an application to join Next STEPs for their upcoming research studio session on July 15th. Each research studio is customized to the needs of the investigator and includes a focused 45-minute discussion with 2–4 experienced investigators. These sessions will address specific questions regarding the conduct of nursing home clinical research.
- The NIA Impact Collaboratory is accepting applications for their Pilot Grant Program through July 23rd. The program will fund three pilot embeded pragmatic clinical trails that are designed to inform the design of a future full-scale trail for people living with dementia and their care partners.
