Opportunity Description:

This PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA) invites applications for high-impact patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects. For Cycle 3 2025, PCORI has identified Special Areas of Emphasis (SAEs) within the BPS funding opportunity. The purpose of calling out these SAEs is to encourage submissions to these areas, not to limit submissions only to these topics. Applicants addressing an SAE must identify which of the listed areas of research is best associated with their research approach.

  • Treatments and Strategies To Address Menopausal Symptoms: PCORI is interested in supporting high-quality, patient-centered research to study the comparative clinical effectiveness, including the safety, of interventions that address menopausal symptoms and/or optimize the health and quality of life for peri- and/or post-menopausal women. These studies should generate rigorous evidence to support health decision making for patients, caregivers, clinicians, payers, purchasers and other stakeholders. Of particular interest are large, multi-site, randomized controlled trials studying hormonal, non-hormonal pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments (including questions related to treatment dose, timing, duration and route of administration), as well as comparisons of health-system- or community-level interventions to promote evidence-based, patient-centered care. Although not required, studies focused on the following are encouraged: premature or early menopause; surgically or medically induced menopause (e.g., hysterectomy with or without oophorectomy); severe vasomotor symptoms; primary ovarian insufficiency; and/or women who are at risk for or survivors of breast and other cancers.
  • Promoting Maternal Sleep Health During Pregnancy and Postpartum: PCORI is interested in supporting high-quality, patient-centered CER projects comparing interventions shown to be efficacious or in widespread use that address sleep health during pregnancy and the postpartum period (up to 12 months). Of particular interest are large, multi-site, randomized studies of interventions in various settings such as community-based settings, hospital and non-hospital settings, or other healthcare settings. Although not required, interventions for populations or groups with comorbidities (e.g., Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and mood disorders) are encouraged.
  • Addressing the Mental and Behavioral Health Challenges of Individuals Living With Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) and Their Care Partners: PCORI seeks to fund high quality, patient-centered CER to improve the mental and behavioral health outcomes of individuals living with ADRD and their care partners. PCORI is interested in studies that compare behavioral, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to manage mental or behavioral symptoms of ADRD. These interventions are required to be efficacious or in widespread use and may include comparisons of care coordination approaches or other models of care delivery for individuals living with mental or behavioral health symptoms of ADRD. Of particular interest are large, multi-site, randomized studies of interventions in various settings such as community-based settings, long-term care facilities or other healthcare settings.
