New York, NY (June 16, 2026) – Today, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) released an updated position statement on advancing the healthcare of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and more (LGBTQI+) older adults. In an effort to support progress on eliminating discrimination against LGBTQI+ older adults in healthcare and supporting integration of evidence-based approaches to caring for these older adults across care settings, AGS established a writing group to update and build upon the 2015 position statement.
The updated position statement includes recommendations on inclusive education, policy reform, and focused research such as standardized training for all healthcare staff, with specialized instruction for clinicians caring for LGBTQI+ older adults; maintaining nondiscriminatory measures and supporting chosen families in caregiving in policies; and advancing sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection and investigating mechanisms that drive disparities and facilitate health promotion.
This paper is one of many efforts that AGS has undertaken in support of its vision for a future where we are all supported by and able to contribute to communities where ageism, ableism, classism, homophobia, racism, sexism, xenophobia, and other forms of bias and discrimination no longer impact healthcare access, quality, and outcomes for older adults and their caregivers. This updated position statement has been published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and can be found at https://doi.org/10.1111/jgs.70470.
