New York, NY (April 29, 2025) — The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is thrilled to announce that Jeff Williamson, MD, MHS will be delivering this year’s Henderson State of the Art lecture, which will take place during the AGS Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago IL, slated for May 8 – 10 (pre-conference day: Wednesday, May 7)

The honor of delivering the Henderson State-of-the Art Lecture is bestowed upon those who embody the legacy of Dr. Edward Henderson, a former AGS Vice President, President, and Executive Director, renowned for his influential work in human aging and geriatric medicine. This year’s presenter, Dr. Jeff Williamson, exemplifies Dr. Henderson’s leadership, dedication and commitment to advancing care for all of us as we age. Dr. Williamson, an internationally recognized geriatrician and clinical trialist, is a visionary leader whose contributions to geriatric medicine and aging research have had a lasting impact in advancing outcomes for older adults.

"We are delighted to welcome my colleague and friend Dr. Jeff Williamson as our 2025 Henderson State-of-the-Art Lecturer," said Mark A. Supiano, MD, AGSF, President of the AGS. "Dr. Williamson’s leadership in gerontology and geriatric medicine, his dedication to advancing healthcare innovation, and his influential role in hypertension and Alzheimer’s disease research embody the spirit of Dr. Henderson’s legacy. Through his work at Wake Forest School of Medicine—where he serves as Chief of the Section on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, Director of the Center for Healthcare Innovation, and a leader in both the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the Wake Forest Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center—Dr. Williamson continues to shape the future of aging research and care."

As the 2025 Henderson State-of-the-Art Lecturer, Dr. Williamson will explore the impact of aging research on improving outcomes for all of us as we age. During his first year of fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Linda Fried suggested that he consider a landmark concept article by Dr. Jim Fries that had been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, "Aging, Natural Death, and the Compression of Morbidity”, as a framework for his career. Dr. Williamson credits Dr. Fried’s advice and ongoing mentorship as he pursued a career focused on improving the health and well-being of older adults. The fruit of Drs. Fries's work and Fried's advice culminates in the work that he accomplished with his colleagues as part of the SPRINT and SPRINT MIND clinical trial.

"It is an incredible honor to deliver the 2025 Henderson State-of-the-Art Lecture and to be part of a tradition that celebrates the advancement of geriatrics,” said Dr. Williamson. “The work of pioneers like Dr. Jim Fries and Dr. Linda Fried has shaped my approach to research, and I am eager to share how collaboration across specialties can drive meaningful improvements in clinical outcomes for older adults. I look forward to exploring how we can continue to integrate aging-focused perspectives into clinical trials to ensure that the care we provide is truly aligned with the needs of an aging population."
