Statement from Rafael Correa-Cano, M.D., MSc
National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition
I am writing with great enthusiasm to express my interest in the position of Co-Chair for the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Fellow-in-Training (FIT) Section. My commitment to geriatrics is driven by the core values of the AGS: a desire to improve the health, independence, and quality of life for all older people. My engagement with the Society, through the resources provided by the AGS in my daily clinical practice, has solidified my desire to serve my fellow trainees and contribute more directly to the AGS mission.
Throughout my training, I have sought opportunities to develop the skills necessary to lead and serve this community. As a Chief of Fellows in Medical Oncology my role was to organize monthly roles, mediate concerns, and represent the interests of my peers; those experiences have prepared me for the collaborative nature of the Co-Chair role. My passion for education, as demonstrated, aligns with the AGS's educational mission. Furthermore, my experience mentoring junior residents, and geriatric fellows and being a professor in medical oncology has reinforced my belief in the power of the AGS Mentoring Program, a resource I am eager to strengthen and expand for all fellows.
If selected, my vision is to focus on three core pillars: enhancing career development, fostering interprofessional collaboration, and amplifying trainee scholarship. First, to bridge the crucial gap between fellowship and early-career practice, I will propose a "Career Pathways in Geriatrics" webinar series. By collaborating with our sister organization, the Association of Directors of Geriatrics Academic Programs (ADGAP), we can connect fellows directly with program directors and division chiefs to explore the diverse career opportunities our field offers. This initiative would provide invaluable, practical guidance as we plan our professional futures.
Second, I will champion the interprofessional spirit that defines the AGS. I propose creating a joint virtual case conference series with the FIT Section and the trainee members of the Oncology department, as well as the Nurses, Pharmacists, and Social Workers Sections. This initiative would not only provide rich, team-based learning but also build the collaborative relationships that are essential for providing high-quality, person-centered care.
Finally, to better showcase the outstanding work of our members, I will propose the formation of a FIT Communications Working Group. Modeled on successful structures in other professional societies, this group could launch a dedicated #AGSFIT social media campaign and a quarterly e-newsletter to celebrate our members' publications, presentations, and awards, thereby increasing the visibility of trainee contributions to the field.
My goal as Co-Chair would be to empower my fellow trainees, strengthen our community, and ensure the FIT Section is a dynamic and indispensable part of the American Geriatrics Society. Thank you for your time and for considering my application. I am eager for the opportunity to contribute to the future of our society.
