Nominations Open for AGS Standing Committee

AGS is seeking Applications for its nine  AGS Standing Committees for three-year-terms beginning in May of 2024.  The ideal applicant will share the Society’s commitment to improving the health, independence, and quality of life of all older people. They will bring an open mind to Committee discussions, be active participants in committee projects, and be willing to share their knowledge and expertise with the Committee they are appointed to.

Why Join an AGS Committee?

Committee service is an opportunity to strengthen and grow your national network, work on projects that you are passionate about, learn new leadership skills, and so much more. Our committee members are leading writing groups, developing tool kits, improving payment for geriatrics health professionals, and participating in efforts to improve diversity in the research that is presented at the AGS Annual Scientific meeting. AGS Committee members are frequently asked to serve as the AGS representative to external groups and to speak with media in alignment with their expertise. Prior service on an AGS Committee is preferred when the Nominating Committee is considering candidates for the AGS Board.

Committee Member Responsibilities

Committee members are expected to participate in full committee meetings and be active on subcommittees or workgroups as established by a committee and aligned with their interests.  Committees meet virtually twice a year (March/April and September/October).  Committee members participating in subcommittees or writing groups typically have additional meetings and conduct work via email. In addition, there are social gatherings for AGS leaders in years where the AGS is holding an in-person Annual Meeting in May.  The AGS is currently piloting an alternating schedule of face-to-face (2025, 2027) and virtual (2024, 2026) meetings.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates, at the time of application, must be an AGS member in good standing1.

The application packet must include:

  • A completed application;
  • Two letters of recommendation. One letter should preferably come from a current or past AGS Board/Committee member and the second can come from a mentor or colleague.  If the applicant does not know any current or past AGS leaders, a second letter can be submitted from someone outside their current institution.
  • Your CV.

The deadline for applications is Monday, January 8, 2024 and materials should be submitted to Mary Jordan Samuel at mjsamuel@americangeriatrics.org

1 Under the By-Laws, a member in good standing is considered a member who has paid their annual membership dues.
