About Transdisciplinary Aging Research Pilot/Planning Grants

The Clinician-Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) Coordinating Center is seeking to fund pilot or planning grants that aim to stimulate new collaborations focused on the development of clinical aging research projects.

A major goal of this effort is to bridge junior and advanced researchers from different disciplines and institutions in order to stimulate new areas of age-related clinically-relevant research that is focused on generating or analyzing data from human subjects. This might include epidemiological, clinical, health services, or biological measurement research. Funding may be used by investigators who are collecting preliminary data in emerging areas and/or understudied areas of clinical aging research, for collaborative projects to support transdisciplinary collaborations, or for smaller planning grants. The funding also provides opportunities to build mentee/mentor relationships at different institutions and content expertise in different disciplines for the junior investigator.

Background

Although important progress has been made through initiatives that integrate geriatrics and aging research into the medical, surgical and other clinical disciplines, further significant commitment is needed to train the future leaders in aging research. The Clin-STAR Coordinating Center seeks to accelerate these efforts by offering activities and resources for the cultivation, connection, and synergy of clinician-scientists in aging research from disparate disciplines and from institutions across the US.

Purpose

This mechanism provides funding for at least three pilot or planning grants. Awards will be made to junior clinician-scientists who work collaboratively with an established (senior) investigator(s) from a different discipline at a different institution. Funding may be used by investigators who are collecting preliminary data in emerging areas and/or understudied areas of clinical aging research, for collaborative projects to support transdisciplinary collaborations, or for smaller planning grants (up to $10K). The latter may be especially of interest to investigators from disciplines that do not have a strong tradition of collaboration by providing seed money to help develop or expand potential collaborations. Small clinical trials are eligible under this mechanism.

Each non-planning grant award will provide up to $50,000 in direct costs. In addition, up to 8% ($4,000) may be budgeted for indirect costs. This rate is set by AFAR. If you have questions or concerns about the indirect rate, please contact AFAR before submitting a letter of intent.

Applicants may propose to use the award over the course of one or two years as justified by the proposed activity. Funding will begin October 1, 2023.

Award and Reporting Requirements

Funding will be awarded as a subcontract from the American Federation for Aging Research, which will also include support for indirect costs (up to 8%/$4,000). The junior investigator should be identified as the Principal Investigator (i.e., contact). Approval from NIA of a data and safety monitoring plan will be required prior to award for projects that involve more than minimal risk human subjects research. All questions regarding the award should be directed to the contact listed on the notice of award. Applicants should note that IRB certification (for human subjects) and/or Animal Use Committee approval (for animal subjects) must be provided before a grant award can be made. If an IRB approval is required for a study, then to maintain compliance with NIH single IRB policies, the pilot awardee’s institution’s IRB for that study serves as the IRB of record. The American Federation for Aging Research (Clin-STAR primary awardee) will cede the review to the pilot awardee’s institution’s IRB through a reliance agreement with that institution. Awardees are required to submit annual progress report with a final narrative and financial reports.
