New York (Oct. 26, 2020) — With its more than 6,000 members continuing to care for older Americans affected by COVID-19 at the front-line of the nation’s pandemic response, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) today stood in solidarity with the Council of Medical Special Societies (CMSS) in condemning President Trump’s baseless claim that hospitals and physicians are inflating the number of COVID-19 deaths for their own financial gain.

New York (Nov. 2, 2020)—The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) today publicly announced its plan for how it will begin to address the intersection of structural racism and ageism, after issuing a position statement on discrimination this summer.

“Since we issued that statement, AGS leaders have spent the intervening time thinking about what that commitment means for a Society that is focused on addressing another big ism – ageism – in health care. We’ve also been in learning mode, working to understand our own implicit bias and gathering ideas for achieving lasting and meaningful change,” said AGS CEO Nancy E. Lundebjerg, MPA.

The AGS has committed to three actions steps to address racism in health care, given its impact on older adults, their families, and their communities: (1) affirming the Society’s commitment to creating a future where health care is free of discrimination and other forms of bias; (2) ensuring its educational programs and products address the diversity of older adults; and (3) setting an aspirational goal of guaranteeing that all original research published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) and presented at the AGS Annual Scientific Meeting will take full account of ethnicity, gender, disability, age, and sexual orientation in design, undertaking, and reporting by 2031.

New York, NY (Dec. 4, 2020) – The AGS today commends the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for making long-overdue improvements in reimbursement for geriatrics and primary care in the 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule issued this week. The AGS has long advocated for appropriately valuing outpatient geriatrics and primary care services and urges Congress to ensure that these changes are fully implemented on January 1, as finalized by CMS.

New York (Dec. 21, 2020) —The American Geriatrics Society today commends the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its speedy, but thorough and transparent emergency use authorization of two COVID-19 vaccines and expresses its support for the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendations on groups that should be prioritized for vaccination in the initial phases of the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program.

“An independent expert advisory board, FDA officials, and members of the ACIP have now vetted the available data for both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and the AGS trusts the science behind them. We are happy to note that adults ages 65 and older comprised at least 21 percent of participants in Phase 3 clinical trials, and both vaccines demonstrated at least 86.5 percent efficacy in that age group,” said AGS President Annette Medina-Walpole, MD, AGSF.  “Based on these results, we encourage older adults to get vaccinated when the vaccine becomes available to them.”

New York (Jan. 19, 2021) —The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) launched its new AGS Cognitive Screening Toolkit on the iGeriatrics app today, introducing an easy-to-access resource that can help clinicians select the appropriate free, open-access cognitive screening test among those identified by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) for use with primary care patients.

Users can browse each of the 10 free cognitive screening tests or narrow their choices using filters based on how the test is administered: whether it evaluates a patient's executive function and/or short-term memory; whether it is simple or challenging to score; and whether it takes less or more than 10 minutes to complete.

New York (March 22, 2021) —The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) condemns the escalating violence directed at and ongoing harassment of Asian Americans. We are deeply saddened by the shootings in the Atlanta area that killed eight people, the majority of whom were women of Asian descent. We stand against discrimination, harassment, prejudice, systemic injustice, and violence targeting any individual for their identity.  The AGS is committed to achieving a just society, one where all people are full members of our communities and entitled to equal protection and treatment.  We renew our ongoing commitment to working with other stakeholders on preventing firearms from being used intentionally to cause harm. 

In the short term, we are heartened by the passage of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2021 and Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 in the U.S. House of Representatives and call on the Senate to swiftly approve and send these bills to President Biden’s desk for signature.

New York (June 21, 2021)—The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) has published an updated version of the AGS Minimum Geriatrics Competencies for Graduating Medical Students, which were created to ensure that medical school graduates across the U.S. are prepared to provide high-quality care for us all as we age.  A refresh of the original set first published more than a decade ago, the 27 competencies integrate new concepts that have emerged more recently in the field of geriatrics, including frailty and person-centered care, and are framed around five key areas of focus for all geriatrics healthcare professionals.

“The updated competencies reflect an evolution in how we frame the work of geriatrics health professionals, a greater understanding of frailty, and a greater focus nationally on ensuring that care is person-centered and driven by individual goals,” explained AGS President Peter Hollmann, MD, AGSF.  “With these competencies, the field of geriatrics has defined not just what all physicians should know as they embark on their careers but also how they should put that knowledge into practice.”

Kelley, MD, MSHS, Vice Chair of Health Policy and Faculty Development and Hermann Merkin Professor in Palliative Care in the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, and Senior Associate Dean for Gender Equity in Research Affairs at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. 

The award will be presented at the AGS 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting (#AGS22) (May 12-14; pre-conference day: May 11) in Orlando. As a part of the conference program, Dr. Kelley will be delivering a lecture on Embracing Complexity: A Geriatrician's Approach to Understanding Serious Illness.

New York, NY (April 6, 2022)—Today, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) recommended that older people follow the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) revised recommendations for adult vaccination.

“Staying current with immunization recommendations is particularly important for adults 65 years old and older, because they are at increased risk of severe complications from vaccine-preventable illnesses,” said @AmerGeriatrics President Peter Hollmann, MD, AGSF. “The coronavirus pandemic has truly emphasized the importance of vaccines in the prevention of disease " Dr. Hollmann added.

Geriatrics health professionals are pioneers in advanced-illness care for older individuals with a focus on championing interprofessional teams, eliciting personal care goals, and treating older people as whole persons. They are in a unique position to offer immunization-related information tailored to the maintenance and reduction of risks related to each individual’s health conditions.

Brangman, MD, FACP, AGSF as recipient of the 2022 Edward Henderson Award for her research and clinical achievements in geriatrics, particularly for her work in Alzheimer’s disease, hospice and palliative medicine, depression, and end of life care. Dr. Brangman is a Distinguished Service Professor and Chair of the Department of Geriatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, and Director of the Upstate Center of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease (CEAD).

New York (April 11, 2022)—The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) today announced that Mitchell T. Heflin, MD, MHS, will be honored with the 2022 Dennis W. Jahnigen Award for his dedication to advancing health professions education that enables health care providers in a variety of settings to care effectively for older adults. Dr. Heflin, a tenured Professor of Medicine, is Vice Chief for Education in the Division of Geriatrics and Associate Dean for Interprofessional Education and Care at the Duke University Schools of Medicine and Nursing.
 
As a Principal Investigator on a prestigious Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Dr. Heflin made lasting connections with many agencies that support older adults. In addition, he has mentored and supported scores of fellows and junior faculty from multiple specialties and professions who aspire to become advanced clinicians and educators.

New York, NY (April 19, 2022)—Advancing care for older people across health specialties, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the AGS Health in Aging Foundation today announced that Lauren Southerland, MD, of Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center will receive this year’s Jeffrey H. Silverstein Memorial Award for Emerging Investigators in the Surgical and Related Medical Specialties. Presented at the AGS 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting (#AGS22), held May 12 – 14 in Orlando, Florida, the award will recognize Dr. Southerland for pioneering multidisciplinary geriatric models of care for older adults who have emergency healthcare needs.
 
“Since its inception, the AGS has worked to advance the care of older adults and to ensure that all our practitioners are skilled in delivering the specialized health care older adults require as they age. New York (April 20, 2022 )—The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) will this year honor past AGS President Jerry C. Johnson, MD, AGSF, of the University of Pennsylvania with the prestigious Nascher/Manning Award, given biannually at the AGS Annual Scientific Meeting (#AGS22 will be held in Orlando May 12 – 14, pre-conference day May 11). Having previously served as Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine from 2001-2018, Dr. Johnson is now a Professor Emeritus at this institution and he remains committed to health professionals in training through teaching and mentorship. He joins an elite cadre of geriatrics healthcare professionals recognized with the Nascher/Manning Award since its inception in 1987.
